Appendix 6:

The Pitfalls of the Big Box Game of “Lower Pricing”

As an example of how things work below is a blog-post reply on the Walmart log/forum from “no_hazmats” in reply to “arvay”.  I my opinion, “no_ hazmats” has given  an excellent explanation with great examples!!!  … of course, that’s why it is used it here! {Bolding added as emphasis by L’ iv.}

{These are sections of/statements from http://walmartstores.com/Sustainability/  at time of writing. which appear below}

“no_hazmats”:   I won’t reply to the bank comments either – they really don’t apply.

Low prices for certain aren’t a panacea. One of my many issues is that these big-boxes create a new economy that is centered on them and the need for low prices. It kills customer satisfaction, kills quality, kills brand loyalty, and kills the environment. I know, arvay, you’re skeptical, but consider this real world example:

Home Depot has a buyers fair every year where they call all their suppliers in together to determine which products they buy and sell for the year. They rent the football stadium in Atlanta and each area has a little tent set up. In one area, cordless drills, in another area, drywall, and so on. In the drill tent, ALL of the suppliers are there together. The drill buyer from HD tells them how many cordless 3/8″ drills they’re planning to sell in a given year. Who wants the business? And the suppliers have to submit their bids in front of their competitors. No one wants to not participate in this process because HD represents Millions of drills / year. So they lower and lower their cost to HD to get as big of an order as they can.

So far this seems good for the consumer, as you say – lower costs, right? But what do the suppliers do immediately after they’ve been raped by HD? They’re on the phone with their factory in China: “We’ve got to shave $3.50 off the cost of the 3/8″ cordless drill this year! What can you do?” And the answer might be buying a cheaper grade of steel for the chuck, or thinner plastic in the handle, or lower grade batteries. And that’s what HD buys and then sells to us. That’s also why the batteries on my DeWalt drill last less than a year or why the entire head flew off my Reciprocating saw. Of course, these items are cheaper now than they’ve ever been, so I can just run out to HD and buy another of each of those, right. THAT is exactly what HD is counting on.

Further, Brand names are worth nothing any more. All those tools are being made overseas to the lowest possible standards.

But because HD is buying so much of their product, those companies cannot afford to make ANY high quality tools any more. So even the local hardware store cannot buy anything of any significantly higher quantity than what HD sells. So as a result, HD has ruined my experience of wanting to own a high-quality tool, ruined the quality of all power tools in the market, diminished once-valued brand names like DeWalt or Milwaukee, forced me to

throw another power tool into the landfill. They have the power to do that and they DO do that. And it’s the same with many many other products that big box stores sell.

It used to be that if I needed a power tool I’d talk to a tradesman or a hardware store owner, they’d tell me what had the highest quality and why – they know what got returned for defects, what lasted the longest. Now, in a HD, the kid working in the tool aisle knows nothing of the products and just grunts and points to whatever is on special.

Let’s go back to food. So a local grower gets a nice contract from Wal-Mart for her organic garlic. Great. Until she has 20 acres of garlic planted – exactly enough to fulfill the contract. It’s been a wonderful season – the garlic has grown bigger and she has a record yield – so does everyone else, though. And just then the Wal-Mart buyer calls and lets the grower know that because (choose whatever bailout clause they have in the contract), Wal-Mart won’t be needing any garlic from her this autumn.

So the grower is completely screwed, having unfortunately put all her eggs into that one basket, so to speak. Of course, she’d never sign another crappy contract with Wal-Mart like that again, she’s learned her lesson.  But Wal-Mart doesn’t care; their “Buy Local Ag” campaign is taking off, and new, as-yet-unscrewed growers are lining up to sign garlic contracts. Or whatever. Walmart is banking on that too.

So you take some initiative, avary. Explain how these practices help the local economy?

And by the way, I DO NOT WORK for A&P. I own a nursery, and I know about the kinds of practices I’ve described. And we are a Triple Bottom Line business. Our state, Maryland, was the first state in the country to pass a law to identify legitimate TBL businesses, and to require them to publicly report on their financial, environmental, and social justice activities. I registered our business as a Maryland Benefit Corporation on the day the law went into effect. I work with local businesses in Maryland to promote a healthy living economy and to promote real sustainability in business and at home. My agenda is rooted in my passion to keep our local economy alive, not in a personal investment in bringing any other entities down. I just like a little honesty, and by not sharing their business practices, these companies are not being particularly forthcoming. Learn more about my business at http://www.greenroofplants.com/ or http://www.greenroofplants.com/sustainability

And, oh by the way. You might respond that the reasons prices are driven down in the example above is because lower prices is what customers want. That is only true to a degree, and it takes time for the negative impact of poor quality at low prices to be felt by consumers and longer yet for it to be felt by the stores. But they are converging on those points and eventually customers will demand higher quality, and will stop buying the crap. When things like the recent effects of ‘Chinese Drywall’ and poison baby formulas are felt, consumers realize that low prices come at a high cost.

Thirty Little Known Facts About America
.

“In Indian country, we should probably insist, first off, that our ancestors have never gotten the credit they deserve from this country for surviving. Survival wasn’t as easy then as it seems now, and they never would have made it if they’d spent centuries wandering in a daze until they came across a dead buffalo beside a cold spring, with a lightning strike for fire somewhere in the background. To the contrary, tribes cooperated with and among each other on everything from buffalo hunts to the fish catch and crop harvests, none of which could have happened if our tribes had not known all about self-governance.”

{It is highly important to know that words we use in our daily life can have a very different meaning in “legal languaging”.  There are also differences in words that many people may erroneously equate the same, as in example: …laws, ordinances, codes, statutes; these are all very different.     …or person, or citizen, flesh and blood person, resident: these all have more depth and differing fromo every day meanings, than most folks are aware.

Black’s Law Dictionary 6th edition is considered the standard today. If You can get an earlier edition You may even find meanings of words that have changed or altered from what You find in the 6th edition.   Happy Hunting!}

Thirty Little Known Facts about America

“An important part of accepting the freedom being restored is for us to know enough of the accurate history of what we have passed through. Our government, the way it has been operating, and banking – as it has been used against us–all are being massively changed in the reformation process. NESARA. National Economic Security and Reformation Act called by many: The Reformation. Presented below is a list of facts provided separately not officially but from good research. It is this kind of research and in depth study of law by countless numbers of people looking for the truth as their defense against the many forms of government entrapment our people have been caught up in.”    ~ Jim Donovan

Appendix 18:

Push Back Against FDA Growing,

…Sheriff to Keep Feds Out!
.

Many interesting issues in this blog post. The food sovereignty movement, the 10th amendment, states rights vs. federal regulation, local communities organizing to support community farming, push back against the large commercial food companies that line Congress members’ pockets – to name a few. Good material for thought. As always, use your discretion.  — Pat  {2011 July 28 by Pat Donworth}

by Bernie LaForest and Michael Boldin  7/22/2011

http://www.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2011/07/22/push-back-against-fda-growing/

A county assembly in Washington State has just passed a food freedom ordinance which would punish federal agents with up to ten years in prison and $20,000 fines.

On July 20th, the Stevens County Assembly finalized the ordinance. They are now in the process of collecting signatures from the residents of Stevens County – urging them to to claim his/her natural right to grow, produce, purchase, and consume the foods of their choice.

Beyond that, the passed ordinance would make it unlawful for agents of either the State or Federal government to execute laws that interfere with the ordinance.

Already four towns in Maine have passed similar measures, and others around the country have indicated they’re looking at the same.
.

Regulations, Regulations, and More Regulations

Last year, Congress introduced the Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510) which opponents say will lead to crushing regulations on local food production – at the benefit of the big corporate farming interests that backed passage of the law. Local food ordinances appear to be a direct response to the new regulations. The Stevens County Ordinance states, in part, that:

WHEREAS, We find the history of government regulators, even with hundreds of food regulations on the books, shows they are incapable of protecting citizens from exposure to food poisoning events from foods produced by corporate farming

What exactly have all of these regulations given you? For example:

  • The year-long raw milk sting operation that resulted in a raid consisting of two US Marshals, two State Troopers and two FDA officials on a SWAT like assault on an Amish farm in Pennsylvania at 5 a.m.

{The following is reproduced from RumorMillNews website, with minor modifications:}

On June 16, 2011, the US Supreme Court overturned a US Court of Appeal ruling; and, believe it or not, reasserted not only State sovereignty but individual sovereignty as well.

And we thought the government was going to hell in a hand basket!

This unanimous decision, as I {RumorMillNews} see it, is a major turning point, a visible shift in consciousness of the ruling elite. All things are possible.

Good News! This was a 9-0 decision! The awakening is happening! I did a video about this today: http://youtube/FuPo335Wp5Q  {Same rumormillnews.com video as above}
